Jean Bart

Tier: 0

Jean Bart is very unique, for several reasons.  She is the only T0 BB with no barrage, but has still earned her place in the tier.

Jean Bart has an extremely rare LB bonus: Preloaded Main Gun.  This means that she STARTS each combat with her Main Gun charge off-cooldown and ready to fire.  Only one other ship in the entire game - {Dunkerque} - has Preloaded Main Gun, and it is extremely powerful.  This (along with her skills) makes Jean Bart one of the premier backline fast-killers, often able to end both siren and boss fights before normal BBs even have a chance to fire once.

Skill: Pirate's Soul

This skill is the other reason for Jean Bart’s T0 placement.  To clarify: “first main gun volley of each salvo” means the first of her two Main Gun volleys each Main Gun activation.  This is also the volley that counts as “manually aimed” for the other damage bonus.  This also synergizes with Jean Bart’s high Main Gun efficiency (courtesy of being a MG+1 BB).

When playing on manual, the damage of Jean Bart’s first volley reaches absurd heights that can one- or two-shot even durable elite enemies - outdamaging even “OP” barrage BBs.  With enough damage amp support, she can even one-shot some high-level bosses (although not the ch13 ones).

Skill: Final Shot

This skill gives the 380mm (aka the Jean Bart gun) the highest damage potential of any BB gun - especially when combined with the black and white shells.  However, it comes with some serious baggage that makes it unusable on any other ship, and often frustrating even on Jean Bart.

1) Horrible Spread - This gun does not like to land its shells in the center of the reticle.  At all.  WHERE, exactly, they will land is unpredictable, and often causes DPS loss due to missed shots.

2) Horrible Firing Pattern - Despite its description, the 380mm has a unique “pseudo-2x2” firing pattern.  Basically, it fires 2 shells, waits a second, then fires the other 2 shells.  Since BB guns aim at a target point (unlike frontline guns which aim at a specific enemy), the second subvolley does NOT reaim based on the desired enemy’s movements, meaning it will often hit the water long after the target has moved elsewhere.  The second subvolley is also not affected by the initial timeslow from activating the Main Gun, increasing effective travel time and further reducing its accuracy.  Unless the target is basically stationary, the second subvolley (and subsequently half her overall damage) will usually miss entirely.

Note that the “pseudo-2x2” pattern only applies to the first volley of a Main Gun activation - follow-up volley(s) will fire all 4 shells at once.  However, since Jean Bart’s power is focused on her first volley, the “pseudo-2x2” affects the majority of her damage output.

Between points 1 and 2, the 380mm is extremely inaccurate, to the point that it often only lands 1-2 shots in the first volley.  Which brings us to the next issue...

3) Poor Damage per Shell - The 380mm’s base damage per shell is only 120, compared to the 156 of the Mk6.  If the 380mm hits only 2 shots, and fails to crit on either one, the damage is significantly lower than a conventional gun.  This makes it highly reliant on landing crits - which, while very likely, is not consistent.

4) Slow Reload - The base reload on the 380mm is almost 2 seconds longer than the Mk6 - although, this is more of an issue with the 380mm on other ships.  Thanks to Jean Bart’s Preloaded Main Gun, and the fact that enemies do not usually survive more than one-two activations, it is not always a concern for her.  However, if the 380mm whiffs entirely, you will have to wait longer than a conventional gun to get another chance.

Due to the above factors, the 380mm’s spectacular damage potential is rarely seen.  It is mostly relevant in event EX maps, where the only thing that matters is the “best” run, and there is no penalty for retrying.  Overall, however, the 380mm is still a good general purpose gun on Jean Bart.  While the accuracy is terrible and the base damage is low, even a single crit can put the entire Main Gun activation on par with (if not greater than) a conventional gun.  Some players, however, will be frustrated with its inconsistencies, and thus I will discuss other gun options.

Other Guns on Jean Bart
It should, again, be hammered home: the 380mm is Jean Bart’s highest damage potential gun.  Whether it is her highest damage gun on average will vary from player to player, and some players have very low tolerance for inconsistency.  This section is for those players who want a more consistent gun option.

Most of Jean Bart’s kit (high gun stats, Preloaded Main Gun, first-volley damage buffs) are not exclusive to the 380mm.  They also work on any conventional gun, and there are some nice choices to choose from.

Mk6
Ol’ reliable.  With Jean Bart’s first skill and Preloaded Main Gun, this thing HURTS.  Top alternative choice.

Izumo Gun
Normally I would not discuss AP guns.  However, Izumo Gun is notable for one reason: In ch13, it can consistently one-shot the dangerous Hiyou/Junyou (2* CV nodes) and Kongou (3* BB nodes), with no damage amp support.  Allowing these enemies to live for extended periods is very dangerous, and being able to delete them the second they spawn makes the map drastically easier.  (Note that this has only been tested on Safe.  Achieving this on Lethal will likely require damage amp support.)

Georgia Gun
The record for highest-damage shell was set with this gun.  Note that it’s less impressive than it sounds, as Georgia Gun only fires 2 shells per volley.  This is better than Izumo Gun, but the difference is actually not as large as on other BBs.  Both guns have a modified base damage of 630 per volley vs Medium armor, while against Heavy armor, Izumo Gun has slightly lower damage per volley (533 modified base vs 543 modified base).  The Georgia Gun also reloads much faster - however, as Jean Bart has Preloaded Main Gun, her gun's reload doesn't matter as much as on other BBs.  The best AP option available.
